Dear Prep Parents and Guardians,

Happy 2023-2024! To our rising 7th and 8th grade families, welcome back! To our newly-admitted 6th grade families, we are so excited to meet you, and have you a part of the Sunset Park Prep family.


We are reaching out to remind you about the start of school, to give you information about what your child needs to have a successful return, and provide a brief overview of our policies to keep them safe and prepared for learning.


Important Dates and Information


Prep: Fast Facts


  • A reminder that ALL New York City Public School students and staff will continue to be IN PERSON this chool year. No virtual/remote option is available for 2023-2024.


  • The FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL is THURSDAY, September 7th. Students start at 9am.


  • Prep is located at:

    • 4004 4th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 11232, 3rd and 4th Floors


  • START AND DISMISSAL TIME - School is from 9am - 3:20 pm.

    • Breakfast is available every day starting at 8 am.

    • We encourage ALL students to arrive to Prep no later than 8:50 am to ensure an on-time arrival to morning homeroom.


  • Here are the morning ARRIVAL entrances for students:

    • 6th Grade: 41st Street

    • 7th Grade: 40th Street (Cafeteria Door)

    • 8th Grade: 40th Street (Cafeteria Door)

    • Notes:

      • Dismissal will be at the same locations above at 3:20pm.

      • Parents/guardians are welcome to drop off/pick up students, but please know this is NOT required in middle school!


First Days of School

We always start the year with an event called “Community Day.” At Community Day on September 7th, your student will meet their teachers, classmates, and have multiple opportunities to learn about Prep’s expectations for students, and most importantly, build camaraderie with their peers.


Note to 6th grade families: Your student will have the additional opportunities to learn about Prep and connect with their classmates! This will include a tour of our school building!


How will your student learn their class and homeroom?

Prep staff will be at morning arrival every day. During morning arrival on Thursday, September 7th, we will make sure your student learns their class (i.e. “601”) and homeroom classroom (i.e. “Third floor, Room 308”). If your student is new to Prep, be assured that we will also staff all hallways at Prep to make sure everyone gets to the right place!


What school supplies do we need?

No one needs supplies on the first day of school and most teachers will give a list on the first or second day. If you are eager to get supplies, here are a few suggestions for what to prepare…

Just a reminder that students do NOT need to bring a tech device as we will provide each student with technology to use in school.

School Policies

  • Dress Code

    • At Prep, students are not required to wear uniforms. We do ask students to have a gym shirt for PE. They will be available for purchase ($8). Your child will learn more about how and where to purchase gym shirts during the first weeks of school!

    • Face masks are optional and we encourage each student and family to make the decision that works best for them.


  • Cell Phones

    • All students must turn in their cell phones every day at Prep.

    • Your student’s cell phone will be collected during morning homeroom, where it will be locked and stored for the remainder of the school day.

    • Your student will get their cell phone back at the end of the day.

    • This policy is in place to maximize student engagement in the classroom, and to prevent distractions. If your student does not turn in their cell phone, it will be confiscated.

      • Confiscated phones are returned to parents only.

      • Thank you for your support in ensuring your student turns in their cell phone!


  • Technology

    • In School

      • Prep values digital literacy. We believe it is essential that your student has access to technology every day at school!

      • At Prep, your student will have access to a Prep chromebook to use as much as they need to during the school day. This chromebook will be stored and kept safe in their homeroom classroom.

    • At Home

      • All students will need a tech device at home to use to complete school assignments, and work in Google Classroom. Prep is committed to ensuring that ALL students have what they need at home!

      • 7th and 8th graders:

        • Do you have a Prep Chromebook or iPad at home? Great! Keep it safe, and use it for this year!

  • Health & Safety Policies and Protocols at Prep


Your child’s health and safety is our utmost importance. While we await official COVID-19 guidance from the NYCDOE and CDC for the 2023-2024 school year, we want to assure you of the steps we take at Prep to keep our school community safe and well, and provide protocols for what to do if your student feels sick.


Health Precautions in Place


Here is what you can expect at Prep this year:

  • Masks and Personal Protective Equipment

    • Face masks are OPTIONAL for all students and staff every day. Again, we encourage each student and family to make the decision that works best for them. Prep will have masks available for any student who needs one.

    • All classrooms will continue to be stocked with hand sanitizer, wipes, gloves, HEPA filters, and more, to ensure students and teachers have what they need to be safe, and stay healthy.

  • Prep will continue to have an arrival team, including admin, school aides, and support staff that will monitor student arrival.

  • We have a school-based Health Clinic in partnership with NYU Langone. Our school’s nurse clinician offers a wide range of medical services, including vaccinations and physicals. For your student to be able to see the nurse, we will need you to complete consent forms - these forms will be sent home with your child in September.


If your child is feeling sick


  • As we continue to face upticks in COVID-19, and experience flu and RSV season in the winter, we rely on your partnership to monitor your child’s health at home.

    • If your child has a fever and/or flu-like symptoms, it is important that they stay home!

  • If your child is absent, please email our main-office staff at office@sunsetparkprep.com. In your email, please include:

    • Your child’s first and last name

    • Your child’s homeroom (“601”)

    • The reason for absence (1-2 sentences)

    • If applicable: a screenshot/attachment of a doctor’s note, test result, etc.

  • Send your child back to school when they are well!

    • This means symptom free for 24 hours without medication.


What communication can families expect as school begins?


As we prepare for the start of school this fall, the way we communicate with parents has become increasingly digital. In September, you can also expect a virtual Back-to-School Night (mark your calendars for Thursday, September 21st!), and a PTA Meeting (mostly virtual). More details will be shared about these events once school begins, but please save this date:


Back to School Night is Thursday, September 21st (virtual). Prep, in partnership with Dewey, will be hosting a Fall After-School Activities Fair on Thursday, September 28th (in person). In early September, we will be sending home a school calendar, and more, with your students. Please be on the lookout!

Normas escolares


  • Código de vestimenta

    • En Prep, no se requiere que los estudiantes usen uniformes. Les pedimos a los estudiantes que tengan una camiseta de gimnasia para educación física.   • Políticas y protocolos de salud y seguridad en Prep


La salud y seguridad de su hijo es nuestra mayor importancia. 開學時，家庭可以期待哪些溝通？

當我們為今年秋季開學做準備時，我們與家長的溝通方式變得越來越數字化。 9 月，您還可以期待虛擬的返校之夜（在您的日曆上標記 9 月 21 日星期四！）和 PTA 會議（大部分是虛擬的）。 開學後，我們將分享有關這些活動的更多詳細信息，但請保存此日期：


返校之夜是 9 月 21 日星期四（虛擬）。 Prep 與 Dewey 合作，將於 9 月 28 日星期四（親自）舉辦秋季課後活動博覽會。 九月初，我們將向您的學生寄送校歷等內容。 請大家留意！
