PTA Meeting: Wednesday, February 16th at 6:30 pm

All parents are invited to attend our virtual PTA Meeting on Wednesday, February 16th from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. This meeting will include a presentation by NYU-Langone on Strengthening Parent and Teen Communication, PTA updates, COVID Updates, and Q&A. Report Cards will be sent home THIS WEEK!

Before we leave for break this week, we will send Report Cards for Marking Period #2 home with students, along with a PupilPath Registration letter, testing kits (see below!) and other important information. When we send home these items, we will also send out a call to all families so you know to look in bookbags!

COVID Update

The number of COVID cases city-wide has decreased, and we have also experienced a drop in cases and a rise in student attendance since the end of January. A quick look at Prep statistics:

  • We currently have ZERO open and active COVID cases among our students and staff. “Open and active” represents students or staff members who are currently quarantining.

  • From the start of winter break (December 24th) to present, we have had over 100 positive COVID cases. Many of these were from positive tests over break, and our highest number of active cases at one time was 53 active cases on Sunday, January 10th.

Please remember, if your child tests positive: FIRST, please do not send them to school! SECOND: please notify us right away by emailing jspalding@schools.nyc.gov, lscott@sunsetparkprep.com, and dchan@sunsetparkprep.com. If the positive test was from a home test kit, please take a picture of the positive result, and include that in your email. The quarantine period for students who test positive is now 5 days.

Two things you can do to help us keep all students safe in school:

  • In-school COVID testing: The DOE in-school testing program will now include both vaccinated and unvaccinated students. Even if you did this last year, please again complete the testing consent form in your NYC Schools Account so that your child may be tested. We sent home paper copies of this consent form with students in December, too. This is one way we can catch cases before they spread.

Student COVID -19 Testing Kits for February Break

To help us all have a safe return to school after February Break, all students will receive a test kit (2 tests) this week, along with a letter explaining what to do with the tests. We ask all staff and all students to test on Saturday, February 26th and again on Sunday, February 27th before returning to school on Monday, February 28th. Students and staff are not required to show proof of a negative test before returning, but we strongly recommend that everyone takes this testing recommendation seriously and works to keep our community safe.

We will distribute KN95 masks for all students on Monday, February 28th for them to wear throughout our first week back. The PTA raised funds for these protective masks, and we hope this will minimize any exposure students have over the mid-winter break.

The PTA is working on scheduling a testing van for staff and students in the first days when we return from break, so that any interested staff member or student with consent could get tested for free. We will provide you with more information on this in the coming days.

Mask Reminder: We are Wearing Masks in Schools

While New York State has announced an ease in mask restrictions for businesses, no update has been shared in regards to New York City public schools. Therefore, all staff, students, and visitors, will continue to be required to wear their mask at all times while inside our school building.

Moving forward, you can be assured that whatever announcement is made about masks in schools, Prep’s administration will be thoroughly reviewing the updated policies, and aligning them to the needs of our school community, and our local Sunset Park neighborhood. Your student’s safety remains our top priority, and our decisions moving forward will keep that priority front and center.

If and when New York State, or the New York City Department of Education, makes an announcement about masks in schools, you can expect follow-up communication from us regarding next steps for Prep.

Important Dates

Here are a few important dates and reminders:

  • Marking Period #2 Report Cards will be sent home the week of February 14th

  • NO SCHOOL on Monday, February 21st - Friday, February 25th for Midwinter Break

  • Parent Teacher Conferences and HALF DAY for students on Thursday, March 10th

  • State ELA Exam on Tuesday, March 29th and Wednesday, March 30th

  • State Math Exam on Tuesday, April 26th and Wednesday, April 27th

After-school activities are back up and running!

As COVID-19 case numbers across the city and in our community have decreased significantly, Lifelines has restarted many of our after-school clubs! We are excited for students to join or rejoin many of the exciting activities that contribute to a diverse, fun, and enriching learning experience.

Actualización de COVID

La cantidad de casos de COVID en toda la ciudad ha disminuido y también hemos experimentado una disminución en los casos y un aumento en la asistencia de los estudiantes desde finales de enero. Un vistazo rápido a las estadísticas de preparación:

  • Actualmente tenemos CERO casos abiertos y activos de COVID entre nuestros estudiantes y personal. "Abierto y activo" representa a los estudiantes o miembros del personal que actualmente están en cuarentena.

  • Desde el comienzo de las vacaciones de invierno (24 de diciembre) hasta el presente, hemos tenido más de 100 casos positivos de COVID. La PTA recaudó fondos para estas máscaras protectoras y esperamos que esto minimice cualquier exposición que tengan los estudiantes durante las vacaciones de mediados de invierno.

Recordatorio de mascarillas: estamos usando mascarillas en las escuelas

Si bien el estado de Nueva York ha anunciado una reducción de las restricciones de mascarillas para las empresas, no se ha compartido ninguna actualización con respecto a las escuelas públicas de la ciudad de Nueva York. Por lo tanto, se seguirá exigiendo que todo el personal, los estudiantes y los visitantes usen su máscara en todo momento mientras estén dentro de nuestro edificio escolar.

En el futuro, puede estar seguro de que cualquier anuncio que se haga sobre máscaras en las escuelas, la administración de Prep revisará minuciosamente las políticas actualizadas y las alineará con las necesidades de nuestra comunidad escolar y nuestro vecindario local de Sunset Park.
